West Coast Meet 1999
(As recalled by Kevin Gee - Organizer)
I woke up, looked out the window to see sunny skies and no clouds at all.
8:00 AM I got into the MX-3 and drove down to Starbucks. With the usual Grande mocha in tow, I headed home to wash and vacuum the car before getting together early with some fellow MX-3ers.
Around 10:00 AM, Rich and Derrick of Cork Sport arrived at my house. Rich got Derrick to wash the Project MX-3 after their 5 hour drive from Portland OR to Vancouver BC the night before. Rich borrowed some tools to fix his camera and I did some final preparations for the meet. Taras and Jay from Victoria arrived at my house at 10:30 a.m.. This was our first time seeing the Project MX-3 with the 2.5 KL-ZE, I was amazed.
I started to load up my car with the meet t-shirts, prizes, pop, rally sheets, car competition entry form and the necessities. 11:00 a.m. rolled around really quickly and we were off to Cactus Club restaurant for lunch. At Cactus Club we met up with Tom and Quinn. After we finished lunch, we were finally off to the meet with a 5 MX-3 entourage and a little behind schedule.
Arriving at the parking lot at Vancouver Community College Langara Campus there were a few MX-3s already there waiting for us. Then more MX-3s started to roll into the parking lot through out the day and at one point we had a count of 25 MX-3s in one spot. We also had the curious looky-loo Honda Prelude owner who drove into the parking lot and then speed off quickly. There were MX-3s from Washington state, Cork Sport from Portland OR, Victoria BC, Nanaimo BC, and the rest from Vancouver. We started with a general walk around to look at all the MX-3s and the owners introduced themselves to each other. In the middle of the meet, I sent some MX-3 owners out in 5 minute intervals to go on a Q&A Time/Distance Car Rally.
There were 5 contestants entered in the MX-3 Car Competition and the winners were given prizes donated by the meets sponsors.
Here are the results:
1st place: Myles McKenzie of Victoria, BC
2nd place: Alvis Mak of Vancouver, BC
3rd place Kevin Buh of Vancouver, BC
Winners of the Car rally were for Q&A: James Shapple of North Vancouver and for Time/Distance: David Hanowski of Nanaimo BC. Rich of Cork Sport was kind enough to bring up some extra prizes that they raffled off to MX-3 owners by drawing their names out of a box.
5:30 p.m. it's been a long day, everybody was getting hungry. There were guys that need to catch the ferry back to Vancouver Island and the few that had to drive back to Washington state. So I decided to call it a day and ended the meet with some closing remarks and thank-you's to everyone who took time out of their busy schedules to come out to the meet. As we exited the parking lot there was a procession of 10 MX-3s driving to Earls restaurant for dinner. After dinner we all parted our ways until next years West Coast MX-3 meet. Hope to see all of you there!
